Launched in 2005 with a 24 bed installation at Oxford Brookes School of Health and Social Care, smots™ is a system of hardware and software that can easily and unobtrusively record video, audio and the vital signs readings of any medical procedure or simulation.
The system records all material all of the time. This ensures that review and debrief is straightforward and when a particular clip arises that is worthy of retention for future training, it can be exported as an MPEG4 video. The smots™ systems are widely used by dental and medical training establishments and having seen considerable success in the UK, across Europe, the Far East and USA. |

It can also allow surgical procedures to be demonstrated to large numbers of consultants in a live operating/lecture theatre connection with no hiring in of expensive and often cumbersome video conferencing facilities. It can be used on an ad-hoc basis as required and is not specifically linked to particular theatres.
Surgeons can operate and comment while fielding questions from their peers in the lecture theatre. These types of events not only provide modern teaching facilities but facilitate the development of teaching material for local and distance learning situations at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The latest simulation technology has already demonstrated its value in medical education and clinical research and is now recognised as a valuable tool for training medical professionals and ensuring the highest levels of patient safety. It is here in this area of simulation technology that smots™ has proved to be such a vital complimentary system. Scotia has associations with Laerdal, Gaumard, Meti and most simulation related manufacturers. |
