Scotia UK plc has developed smots™ applications and products specifically for the medical sector. We have evolved over some forty years and our successful growth has been in many ways due to our ability to create the solutions that specialist market sectors require. The smots™ solutions provide connectivity between operating rooms and postgraduate lecture theatres, medical control rooms and simulation theatres, and indeed extend to the wider network provided by the internet giving inter campus teaching capabilities. Full video and audio links, with remote control of cameras, and recording of all material, are accomplished using the smots™ SC502 unit. This only needs power and network connectivity to allow interaction with the camera "endpoint" from anywhere else on the network.

Scotia's medical observation and training system (smots™) harnesses the very latest technologies and allows us to provide a range of specialist solutions to many of the leading medical and dental training and assessment organisations.

Launched in 2005 with a 24 bed installation at Oxford Brookes School of Health and Social Care, smots™ addresses vital requirements in modern healthcare environments to show the operating, training, resuscitation and patient interaction procedures taking place in controlled environments, to a wider audience. The system records all material all of the time. This ensures that review and debrief is straightforward and when a particular clip arises that is worthy of retention for future training, it can be exported as an MPEG4 video. The smots™ systems are widely used by dental and medical training establishments and having seen considerable success in the UK we now extend our services and capabilities to Europe.

There are of course many applications where constant patient contact will be of the utmost importance - intensive care, high dependency units and baby care units are just some of the situations where constant video and audio contact with secure recording could be beneficial.

The latest simulation technology has already demonstrated its value in medical education and clinical research and is now recognised as a valuable tool for training medical professionals and ensuring the highest levels of patient safety. It is here in this area of simulation technology that smots™ has proved to be such a vital complimentary system. We have associations with Laerdal, Gaumard, Meti and most simulation related manufacturers.

Scotia as a company prides itself on the strength of its relationships with its professional healthcare customers, for whom our name is synonymous with high standards of performance, innovation, and trust. The creation of exemplary facilities can enable medical students to see often complex procedures being carried out live through the use of the interactive technology and Scotia has performed a significant number of live telemedicine events in recent years.
