The smots™ box contains an mpeg4 codec which converts y/c (s-video) camera signals into tcp/ip network traffic. The traffic is then decoded using our control centre software at any user pc location where multiple video streams may be watched simultaneously and in real time.
The stream from the smots™ codec comprises video out, audio out, audio in and control. This allows one way video communications* and 2 way audio communication with the participant at the camera location. It also allows full remote camera control.
*2 way video communications is easily accomplished if a pc running the viewing software is positioned at the camera location.
The streams run at up to 4Mbps 25fps however with the activity controlled frame rate, they reduce their output to zero when there is no motion in front of the camera. Instant buffered startup also ensures that there is no frame loss when motion starts. The network benefits of this system are huge in that all unnecessary network traffic is avoided.
All smots™ cameras are simultaneously recording to our 500Gb network video recorders. These 1U rack mounted units record 24/7 and reap their recordings automatically. This ensures that recordings are only kept for as long as is necessary and then overwritten.
Exported recordings can of course be saved permanently. A single smots™ box is needed per video stream although of course a smots™ unit can record the selected output from an operating theatre control system and that is then subject to whatever selections are made from the surgeons' panel.
